The Nationals selected Ryan Ripken, the son of Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr., in the 15th round of the MLB draft Saturday.

The younger Ripken is a 6-foot-6, 230-pound first baseman from Indian River State College in Florida. The lefty hitter batted .321 with one homer and 24 RBIs in 42 games this season after transferring from South Carolina, where he did not make the roster and redshirted.

Chavis Believes Red Sox Will Move Him To Third

Sep 25, 2014 3:13 PM

Michael Chavis, who the Boston Red Sox drafted with the 26th overall pick in Thursday night's First-Year Player Draft, believes the club will move him to third base.

Chavis was a shortstop at Sprayberry Senior High School in Georgia this past season. He hit .489 with 14 home runs and had 22 stolen bases on his way to being named the state's Gatorade Player of the Year.

"I think I'm going to get moved to third, if I had to guess, but I'm open to playing anywhere as long as I'm playing baseball," he said of Boston's plan for him.

Chavis also believes his game is well-suited for Fenway Park.

"I'm a right-handed power hitter and they got a short porch in left field, so hopefully that'll do a little something," he said.

In drafting the Marietta native, the Red Sox have made the entire Chavis family Boston fans. He grew up one of the few rooting for both the Red Sox and Yankees.

"I grew up split between the Yankees and the Red Sox because half of my mom's side loves the Red Sox and half loves the Yankees," said Chavis, who added that his entire family will now root for Boston.

Pitchers Go 1-2-3 In First Round

Sep 21, 2014 1:43 PM

Each of the first three picks in Thursday night's Major League Baseball draft were pitchers.

The Houston Astros took high school left-hander Brady Aiken, the Miami Marlins selected high school right-hander Tyler Kolek and the Chicago White Sox drafted N.C. State left-hander Carlos Rodon with the first three picks, respectively.

The Chicago Cubs broke the trend by selecting Indiana catcher/outfielder Kyle Schwarber with the No. 4 pick.

The last time the draft began with at least three pitchers was 2011, when the first four selections were hurlers.

It's only the second time since 1965 that a position player wasn't taken among the first three picks.

Pirates Trade Bryan Morris To Marlins For Draft Pick

Oct 19, 2014 11:29 AM

The Pirates today traded right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris to the Marlins. In exchange for Morris, Pittsburgh will receive Miami’s 39th overall selection (competitive balance A) in this year’s First-Year Player Draft on Thursday. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior VP, GM Neal Huntington.

rn

rn

“We feel this trade will have a positive impact on our organization in the short, moderate and long term,” said Huntington. “In the short term, this trade will add a quality prospect to our system that will enhance our ability to make additional pros- pect for major league player type deals while helping us to better sustain crucial prospect depth. Additionally, we feel we have made this move from a position of strength as we have kept our core bullpen intact. In the moderate and long term, we add an additional first-round talent that we project to play a significant role on future Pirates’ teams.”

rn

rn

Pittsburgh will now have 42 selections in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, including four of the first 73 (numbers 24, 39, 64 and 73 entering today).

rn

rn

The Pirates will make a corresponding move to replace Morris on the 25-man active roster prior to tonight’s game in Los Angeles.
